There aren’t many places in the world where you can walk out of one World Heritage Area and head straight into another one. With as much to explore in the rainforest as there is in the reef, its time to lace up those hiking shoes and explore the epic backyard of Tropical North Queensland.

With so much natural beauty everywhere you look, the great outdoors is the place to be. Check out our favourite nature walks in and around the Port Douglas area.

Port Douglas Lookout

Our favourite spot for a morning coffee and breathtaking view! Kick-start your day with a walk up to the lookout on Flagstaff Hill which is just a short walk from Coconut Grove.

Port Douglas is bounded by water on three sides and this lookout gives you a stunning view of the entire panorama. Enjoy sweeping views of sandy Four Mile Beach with fringing palms, the majestic mountains and turquoise sea.

Not only is this a great spot for sunrise and during the day, but a very tranquil spot to relax in the evening – especially during a glistening full moon.

Exercise junkie? The locals favourite workout is running up and down the stairs connecting the beach to the lookout – certainly not for the faint-hearted! You can expect lots of sweat and maybe some tears, but nothing that a refreshing dip in the ocean can’t fix

Don’t feel like walking? You can drive or ride up to the lookout – whichever option you choose, you’ll still be treated to the same glorious views that encapsulate the Tropical North Queensland environment so well.

Flagstaff Hill Walking Trail

This spectacular walking trail was opened in December 2017 and has had a fantastic response with locals and visitors alike. The world class track starts and finishes at 2 of the most iconic spots in Port Douglas - Four Mile Beach & Anzac Park (Rex Smeal Park).

Quickly becoming a 'must do' when you visit Port Douglas, the Flagstaff Hill walking trail offers picturesque vantage points over the Coral Sea, Low Isles and even as far as the Daintree Rainforest and Snapper Island. If it's a photo opportunity you're after - then this walk is for you! However this is also a great option for an intense workout with stair climbs incorporated on the route.

Mossman Gorge

Located in the Southern Part of the Daintree National Park, Mossman Gorge is one of the regions most iconic attractions. Known best for its lush rainforest, refreshing water streams, powerful mountains and stunning Gorge – this is a must on any adventurers holiday to Far North Queensland.

There are many self-guided or tour guided boardwalks that you can choose from, or if your feeling adventurous, you can go off the beaten path and discover some more private swimming holes like the locals favourite ‘Hippie Hole’. If you are looking to extend your knowledge, go on a guided Dreamtime Walk to gain a deeper understanding of the extensive flora & fauna and traditional cultures & beliefs of the Indigenous people.

Take advantage of the abundance of nature walks and absorb the wonders of the dense green rainforest. There is clear signage throughout the rainforest and maps are provided upon entry – so no need to worry about getting lost! Our tip? Pack a picnic lunch and enjoy it by one of the many water holes.

Located just 20 minutes from Port Douglas, the Gorge is easily accessed via daily transfers, tour group buses or simply by driving your own car. The team at Coconut Grove can organise your Mossman Gorge day trip for you.

Daintree Rainforest & Cape Tribulation

Did you know that the Daintree Rainforest is one of the oldest surviving rainforests in the world? To be exact, the flora & fauna have been establishing themselves for over 160 million years!

Now that certainly seems like a good enough reason to book your tropical getaway to Port Douglas and explore the magic that is the Daintree!

Emmagen Creek is one of our favourite spots in the Daintree. Either drive your car and walk 10 minutes or walk an hours hike from Cape Tribulation Beach. You will be greeted with a stunning waterhole and sandy beach.

The Dubuji Boardwalk is a picturesque boardwalk through the forest and mangroves. You can find it signposted on the main road to Cape Tribulation. The walk takes one hour and you can exit on the beach.

If you are looking for a real challenge, then the Mount Sorrow hike near Cape Tribulation is for you! The walk commences on the main road, two hundred metres north of the Kulki - Cape Tribulation Beach turn-off. There is a small car park where you can leave your car. Look for the walking sign which is set just off the road in the bush on the inland side of the road where the track starts. Watch out for leeches!

Bump Track

Calling all fitness freaks! The 6km Bump Track is a must-do for all those who enjoy keeping fit and active. To sweeten the deal, you can enjoy magnificent views across to the sea and even to Mowbray Falls while you walk or run the track.

Did you know the Bump Track was actually the original track linking Port Douglas with the goldfields? Nowadays, the track is a popular trail for walking, mountain biking and horse riding.

To reach the bottom of the Bump Track, head south from Port Douglas along the Captain Cook Highway to Craiglie. Turn right into Mowbray River Road 1.5km south of Craiglie. Turn off Mowbray River Road into Connolly Road and continue for 3.5km to the Bump Track.

Heritage Walking Trail around Port Douglas

If you’re a fan of history then a leisurely stroll through the township of Port Douglas on the ‘Heritage Walking Trail’ would be an ideal activity for you. Travel back in time and see some of the historic landmarks around the town and learn about the rich history of Port Douglas.

You can pick up a self-guided walking map from the Port Douglas Tourist Information Centre or you can call into the Port Douglas Museum (near Anzac Park) for the trail map and more information.

Kuranda Village Walks

Kuranda is very well known for its quaint markets, but did you know there are also multiple different rainforest walking trails with some of the most beautiful flora & fauna in Australia?

A few favourite trails are the Rainforest Canopy Walk and the Jum Rum Creek Walk. These are easily accessible and only take around 40 minutes. We suggest making a day of it and experiencing everything Kuranda has to offer!

One of the best days out in Kuranda is with Brett’s Kuranda Tours! Experience the best of Kuranda with a scenic view on the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway, 2 hours in Kuranda to explore and enjoy some nature walks, a spectacular rail journey on the Kuranda scenic train and a visit to the pristine Palm Cove.

Great Barrier Reef

Just off the town's eastern shore lies one of the world’s most spectacular natural wonders with over 400 species of coral and 1,500 species of fish, sea turtles, dolphins, and rays. The variety of tours is endless and visitors can see the reef from the deck of a boat or snorkel alongside the fish.

Flagstaff Hill

Climb (or drive) up to Flagstaff Hill for one of Port Douglas’s most iconic vantage points. The 1.5 km Flagstaff Hill Walking Trail links Four Mile Beach with Rex Smeal Park, passing viewing platforms with sweeping 180° views of the Coral Sea, Snapper Island, Low Isles, and the rainforest-clad mountain ranges.

Four Mile Beach

The turquoise waters and wide sand deck fringed by palms and mangroves rather than urban sprawl make Four Mile Beach one of the region’s favorites. The waves are gentle and family-friendly, while strong winter Trade Winds make it popular with kite surfers from June to August.

Estuary Cruises

Port Douglas Village

Wonderful stay, 3 Bed 2 Bath Balcony APT.

Excellent place with an open & spacious layout & a wonderful location. We had a 3 BDR w balcony unit & it was wonderful. Bedrooms clean & spacious. Bathrooms very clean. Entire unit is very modern w all amenities available. Huge balcony facing Macrossan, which was very very nice. Very close to restaurants & the beach, as such super convenient. Reception was helpful as needed.

PERFECT PLACE IN PORT DOUGLAS

This place is AMAZING… the best place in Port Douglas. Great location, amenities and the staff is awesome. Perfect place to hang out, grill, deck, and lovely spaces!!!! Beautifully decorated- and pristine grounds with gardens and sitting areas, hot tubs, pools, waterfalls- stunning. Don’t stay anywhere else. This is THE PLACE. Do you like 5 star plus star amenities- this is your place! We loved it here. Stayed for 6 nights.

Beautiful

What a beautiful apartment we stayed in and the staff were so friendly. The apartments are so perfectly situated very near to 4 mile beach and at the start of all the restaurants in the road leading to the marina. If or when we return to Port Douglas we wouldn't consider anywhere else other than Coconut Grove.

Best experience

Having stayed here 2 years ago I decided to return solo for a much needed break. It was amazing and everything about this stay from the booking process to check in, was made perfect by the staff who were excellent. The apartment is very well appointed - luxurious - and having the plunge pool a real bonus. I really don't think I could stay anywhere else now!

A beautiful place

This is a beautiful place to stay, we had the Penthouse Apartment for 7 nights with a private plunge pool, spa & BBQ area on our rooftop, it was very spacious and a great place to relax. The entire apartment was fully contained with that luxury feel . The location is on point, walking distance to the beach and also the main streets of Port Douglas. The staff were very friendly & helpful. We loved staying here and we will definitely be back.

A perfect honeymoon in Port Douglas

We stayed in one of the penthouse apartments for our honeymoon and we are so glad that we chose Coconut Grove to celebrate the occasion. From the first moment we arrived we were made to feel extremely welcome. Opening the door of the apartment we were met by an amazing view and high quality to all aspects of the apartment. There was even a welcome platter waiting for us in the fridge! The penthouse apartments have their own private plunge pool and spacious roof top balcony which added to the private and special feel to our stay. The location of Coconut Grove is perfect. It is removed enough from central Macrossan Street to be quiet and luxurious, but it is within easy walking distance of Four Mile Beach and the many eateries and shops of Port Douglas. The staff, particularly Ali, went out off their way to provide the highest quality service. They were knowledgeable about local activities and we were always greeted with friendly smiles! Overall, our stay was magnificent and we have already booked to come back for our anniversary.

Well what an amazing place this is. The staff are all fantastic especially Ali. We stayed in the penthouse and loved everything about it. The roof top pool and BBQ area and watching the sunrise and sunset was awesome. The Views spectacular.

Fantastic Stay

We had a wonderful stay at coconut grove, the location, amenities, staff and cleanliness were all 5 star. Will definitely come visit again. The swimming pool and spa were an added bonus for relaxing at the end of the day. Wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this accommodation

Great choice in Port Douglas

Two couples shared a two-bedroom, two bath apartment with private pool for four nights. It was a great choice for us. The apartments are very clean and modern, nicely decorated, comfortable and well-appointed. Coming near the end of a long trip and many restaurants, it was a pleasure to shop and use the outside barbecue to make a "home-cooked" meal. The kitchen had everything we needed.

A "Tropical Dream" come true

My husband and I stayed in a penthouse apartment for 10 days It was a fabulous experience and I would return without hesitation It was the best apartment ever and the private pool and separate spa terrific for cooling off and having fun Every need was anticipated and the apartment well stocked and beautifully appointed ( power points plentiful and in useful positions )It was sleek and clean and I could not fault the apartment Renauld and his team were friendly and very efficient and helpful It made such a difference to our holiday as nothing was too much trouble We shall return

Absolutely Charming and Relaxing

Loved the apartment. Very comfortable beds and bathrooms were roomy. Laundry room was a big plus and the patio and plunge pool was great. It was very close to great restaurants and loved walking around the town. The beach was very nice and close.

Best accommodation in Port Douglas

Another great couple of weeks at Coconut Grove, the best place to stay in Port Douglas by far. - Rooms are huge, super clean and well maintained - Staff are beyond amazing and super friendly - Close to all the shops and restaurants PD has to offer - Beach is a block away - Wifi, TVs, equipment etc all top notch Top Tips - head to Wrasse & Roe downstairs for a bite, head to the Tin Shed for a few drinks. Can't wait to go back and do it all gain next year!

Perfect Location & Amenities

We stayed for 5 nights (we were booked for 4, but added an extra day as soon as we got here. We had a top floor apartment with pool and spa combo. Neither pool or spa are heated and they don’t need it. Great hospitality, excellent apartment, clean, well kitted out, just lovely. Brilliant location. Easy walking to beach or centre of town. Will definitely be back. Thanks so much for the great holiday.

What a great apartment!

Wow, what a great place to stay in Port Douglas. The apartment is outstanding with plenty of room and all amenities that you need for a good holiday. The complimentary Welcome Platter was just what we needed after 2 separate flight delays on our trip here & we were starting to get a little frazzled. The staff have been most accommodating and caring. Josephine at reception is an absolute wonder. She is very knowledgeable of the area and a great help in planning what to see & do. Everything in the apartment is great, location perfect, near beach, shops and Cafes/restaurants. Bed is "just right" - not too hard, not too soft. I have a crook lower back so this is important for me. We are definitely planning to come back - it has been so enjoyable.

High Rolling!

We lived our best life for a week on the top level of coconut grove. With a private pool, spa and bbq/lounge area and a huge three bedroom apartment with a fully kitted out kitchen we didn’t want to leave. Super clean. On Macrossan Street so easy to walk everywhere but down the quieter end near four mile beach. Perfection!

Perfect Place to Stay

Perfect place to stay. The apartments are spacious, comfortable, well furnished and very clean. All the staff, reception, maintenance, cleaners were all lovely. Great location being on Macrossan Street but at the quieter end with the beach 30 seconds away. Possibly the best apartment complex I've ever stayed in within Australia (and I've travelled extensively over the years so that's saying something). The welcome cheese board and crackers was spot on too.
